Types of Membership
The Society has six categories of membership. The membership fees are per calendar year. Before applying to become an SBNS Member please ensure that you apply for the correct membership type by checking the options below.
The SBNS are now offering an International Membership that will cover all applicants from High, Middle and Lower Income Countries, see below for more details:
Full Membership - £300
Those Neurosurgeons in the UK and Eire who are on the neurosurgical specialist register.
Associate Membership - £150
Neurosurgeons in training or non-training posts (e.g. specialist registrar, specialist registrar equivalent, locally employed doctor, OOPE, OOPT, fellowship post) in the UK or Eire who are not on the Specialist Register. Those who have recently joined the Specialist Register and are seeking a consultant level post may defer application for full membership until commencing a substantive consultant post.
International Membership - £15 - £150
Neurosurgeons in active practice abroad and those non-medically qualified practitioners who have an interest in Neurological Surgery to the satisfaction of the Council. This includes medical students, nurses, clinical triallists, researchers and allied healthcare workers. Doctors in other specialties which overlap with neurological surgery (e.g. spinal orthopaedic specialists, ENT specialists, neurologists, core surgical trainees, foundation doctors) can apply and are seperated into the below categories:

Affiliated Membership - £25
Those non-medically qualified practitioners in the UK and Eire who have an interest in Neurological Surgery to the satisfaction of the Council. This includes medical students, nurses, clinical triallists, researchers and allied healthcare workers. Doctors in other specialties which overlap with neurological surgery (e.g. spinal orthopaedic specialists, ENT specialists, neurologists, core surgical trainees, foundation doctors) may apply for affiliate membership.
Senior Membership - Free
Previous full members, no longer in remunerated clinical NHS or clinical private practice, subject to Council approval.
Honorary Membership - Free
Reserved for those to whom a particular honour is due. A decision of the Council to be final in determining those who are to become Honorary Members.

Important Information
- Annual Membership Fees are payable on application when setting up your Direct Debit. If you pay by Card then payment is on application and then due on the 15th January each year.
- If your membership fee is outstanding after a period of grace you will be automatically locked out of the website until payment has been made
- Membership shall be automatically forfeited if no subscription has been paid for 7 months after appropriate reminders.
New Membership Applications
Applications can only be made via the SBNS website by filling in the appropriate online form, requirements for application are as follows:
Full Member application: Payment details
Associate Member application: Your current CV, 1 reference from a full member of the Society and payment details
Affiliate Member application: Your current CV, 1 reference from a full member of the Society or your course director and payment details
International Member application: Your current CV, 1 reference from your National Society or Medical Director and payment details
- References should be signed letters, on headed note paper, which can be scaned and uploaded when completing your online application
- Card/ Direct Debit for payment – Payment is required on application
Changing Membership Status
For membership status changes e.g. Associate – Full membership you can email Alix Gordon on [email protected]. CV’s and references are not required.
All applications for membership/change of status have to be approved by the SBNS Council at one of the four meetings held per year. Please check the Council Meetings dates on the Council Page. Applications need to be submitted at least two weeks before a Council Meeting or they will be added to the approvals list for the following meeting.
Your application is then put forward for ratification by the membership at the following SBNS April Council Meeting or the AGM of the Autumn Meeting each year.
Please note: Membership of the society is not a right but a privilege. Members who are temporarily or permanently suspended from the medical register (or similar responsible body) will automatically forfeit their membership. Suspension will be recorded in the minutes of council.
