Education

Successful Neurosurgical practice is dependent on extensive training and continuous development at all stages of a Neurosurgical career.  Training must include the acquisition of knowledge, behaviours, technical and non-technical skills.  Judgement and therefore competence come with experience and trainees are encouraged to get as broad an exposure to neurosurgical practice as possible.

Neurosurgery training in UK is regulated by the General Medical Council (GMC).  The Joint Committee on Surgical Training (JCST) incorporates the Neurosurgical Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) on Neurosurgery and provides advice to the GMC.  Training is supervised locally by the regional deaneries, through the Schools of Surgery and the Neurosurgery Training Programme Directors.

Neurosurgery training in Ireland is regulated by the Irish Medical Council and the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland.
