Journals

The British Journal of Neurosurgery (BJNS) is the official journal of the Society of the British Neurological Surgeons

History

The journal was founded and owned by Huw Griffith and then subsequently owned by John Miles who were both distinguished neurosurgeons. The Journal was produced on behalf of the owners by Taylor and Francis who was the publisher. Later the ownership and management of the journal moved over to the Society of British Neurological Surgeons via an independent trust called The Neurosurgical Foundation which is now responsible for running the British Journal of Neurosurgery.

The BJNS intends to be a British journal with a global outlook reporting primarily British work and completely independent in its editorial matters. The journal publishes original peer-reviewed articles of the highest quality, along with comment and correspondence on all topics of current interest to neurosurgeons worldwide. The focus of the journal is primarily clinical. The BJNS publishes 6 issues a year and currently has an acceptance rate of approximately 10%. The editorial affairs of the British Journal of Neurosurgery are managed by the Editor-in-chief who heads the editorial board which consists of several distinguished neurosurgeons who contribute in their capacity as associate editors.

The current Editor-in-chief is Nitin Mukerji, who follows in the footsteps of past editors – Patrick Mitchell, Paul Eldridge and TRK Varma. Membership of the SBNS gives you access to the British Journal of Neurosurgery.

The BJNS also has a Twitter handle @BJNSNeuro with which you can connect and a LinkedIn page which you can follow. It is a leading international forum for debate in the field of neurosurgery, publishing original peer-reviewed articles of the highest quality, along with comment and correspondence on all topics of current interest to neurosurgeons worldwide.

BJNS Cover Competition

The BJNS seeks to run a ‘Cover competition’ open to all members of the SBNS. We are looking to select original ‘Cover art’ for the 2026 Journals and beyond. 2026 is the SBNS centenary year and the theme generally should be something showcasing the best of British Neurosurgery. The selection committee will be comprised of the BJNS Editorial Board and the SBNS Council. Multiple entries are permitted. Email your entry to the BJNS Editor - Closing date 15 June 2025
