Research

The SBNS activity promotes research activities across the UK neurosurgery community.  Some of these activities are supported by the Academic Committee, which has a long-established structure within the Society.  Its role has evolved over the years, from a focus for clinical academics organising the British Neurosurgery Research Group annual meetings to creating the UK Neurosurgical Research Network and promoting translational research and clinical trials within the ever-evolving climate of modern health care research.  The AC works closely with the British Neurosurgery Trainee Research Collaborative (BNTRC) and the Neurology and Neurosurgery Student Interest Group (NANSIG) to promote and foster aspiring researchers.  The academic committee also provides and promote mentorship to academic trainee and out of programme research trainees.

The academic committee has three working groups with the following aims:

Basic and translational science

Support the network of basic and translational scientist-neurosurgeons

Clinical Trials

•    Provide a forum for discussion and development of clinical trials

•    Identify and support potential new chief investigators to develop their own trials

Medical Technology and Innovation

•    Support the network of neurosurgeons undertaking this research and innovation
•    Identify and support investigators undertaking medical technology studies
